Program Description

CARRE offers training of walking on the treadmill and over ground, for individuals with incomplete spinal cord injuries.

What is treadmill training?

Treadmill training is a recently developed method for retraining walking. The client’s body weight is partially supported with a body harness, so that they can walk on a treadmill.  Manual assistance is provided as needed.

What is over ground training?

Two types of over ground training are being tested right now.  One is precision stepping, similar to that shown in the photo above, where the individual trains to step over obstacles and onto specific targets.  The other is endurance training, where the individual walks for as long and far as possible. Participants train intensively in each of the methods in turn.  Clinical and electrophysiological testing is done regularly through training.  The results will help us understand how the different types of training can be used to maximize the benefit to individuals with spinal cord injury.

What does the training involve?

1) One hour per day, 5 days per week, for 2-3 months at a time, depending on the study.

2) Clinical assessments and research tests are done monthly.

EMG assessment

A physical therapist supervises all training sessions. Potential participants will be screened initially by phone. If deemed potentially appropriate, they will then attend a physiotherapy assessment to identify those who fit the criteria for the research study.ury walking gait training
